ഇന്നലെ സായങ്കാലത്ത് ജൂബിലിടൌണ്‍ ഹാളില്‍ പബ്ലിക്പ്രസംഗസഭ വകയായി മിസ്സ് വില്യംസ്സിന്‍റെ പ്രസംഗം ഉണ്ടായ അവസരത്തില്‍ സംഭവിച്ചചില സംഗതികളെക്കുറിച്ച് ചില ലേഖനങ്ങള്‍ മറ്റൊരേടത്ത് ചേര്‍ത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇവയില്‍ ഒന്ന്, സഭാ സിക്രട്ടരി മിസ്റ്റര്‍ ലെപ്പര്‍, ചില മാന്യസ്ത്രീകളെ ഹാളില്‍നിന്ന് നിര്‍ബന്ധമായി പറഞ്ഞ് ഇളക്കി ബാല്‍ക്കണിയിലെക്കയച്ചതിനെപ്പറ്റിയാണ്. ഈ സ്ത്രീകളില്‍ നാട്ടുകൃസ്ത്യാനികള്‍, യൂറേഷ്യന്‍സ്, ഹിന്തുക്കള്‍ മുതലായവരുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. മിസ്സ് വില്യംസിന്‍റെ പാഠശാലയില്‍ വാധ്യാന്മാരായും വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനികളായുമുള്ള പലരും പ്രത്യേകം ക്ഷണിക്കപ്പെട്ടു ചെന്നതില്‍, മിസ്തര്‍ ലെപ്പറിന്‍റെ ഈ പ്രവൃത്തികൊണ്ട് ഉടനടി മടങ്ങിപ്പോവാന്‍ ഹാളില്‍നിന്നിറങ്ങിയിരുന്നു; ഇവരെ തിരിയെ ഹാളിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോയിരുത്തിയത് മിസ്സ് വില്യംസ് വന്നശേഷം അവര്‍ തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു സംഭവം കാളേജ് പ്രൊഫെസ്സറും പരിഷ്കൃതയൂറോപ്യന്‍ സമുദായത്തില്‍ ഒരംഗവും ആയ മിസ്റ്റര്‍ ലെപ്പറുടെ ഭാഗത്തുനിന്നുണ്ടായത് വളരെ ശോചനീയം തന്നെയാണ്. മറ്റൊരുസംഭവം, ഹാളിന്‍റെ പിന്‍ഭാഗത്തിരുന്നവരില്‍ ചിലരുടെ മര്യാദകേടുനിമിത്തം, പ്രസംഗം മുഴുവനും നടത്തുവാന്‍ കഴിയാതെ നിറുത്തേണ്ടിവന്നതാണ്. സഭാധ്യക്ഷം വഹിച്ച മിസ്തര്‍ ഹാഡ് ജസന്‍ തന്‍റെ ശക്തിയാകെ പ്രയോഗിച്ചു അപേക്ഷിച്ചിട്ടും ഉച്ഛശൃംഖലന്മാരായ അവരുടെ വഷളത്തങ്ങൾ അവര്‍ ഉപേക്ഷിക്കാത്തത് ഏറ്റവും നിന്ദാവഹംതന്നെയാകുന്നു. ഈ ബഹളത്തില്‍, മുന്‍ ഭാഗത്തിരുന്ന സ്ത്രീകളില്‍ ചിലരെ, ചില ആഭാസന്മാര്‍ വടികൊണ്ട് കുത്തി ഉപദ്രവിച്ചതായും ഞങ്ങളറിയുന്നു. ലഹള കൂട്ടിയവരില്‍ ബാലന്മാരായ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളും, വേലയില്ലാതെ വഴികളില്‍ തെണ്ടിനടക്കുന്ന ആഭാസന്മാരും ഉള്‍പ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു എന്ന് തൊന്നുന്നു. ഇത്തരം ബഹളം ഇതിന്‍മുമ്പും ചിലപ്പോള്‍ ഈ ഹാളില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇവരുടെ, മര്യാദകേടിനെപ്പറ്റി അധ്യക്ഷനും, സദസ്യരില്‍ ഒരാളായ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് റെസിഡണ്ട് മിസ്തര്‍ ലയണല്‍ ഡേവിഡ് സനും, പ്രസംഗിച്ചതില്‍, ഒരു മാന്യസ്ത്രീ തന്‍റെ ശരീരസ്ഥിതിയെപ്പോലും ഗണ്യമാക്കാതെ വന്നു പ്രസംഗിക്കാന്‍ ഏറ്റിരുന്നപ്പോള്‍, അതിലേക്ക് മുടക്കം വരുത്തി അവമതിനല്‍കിയ കശ്മലന്മാരുടെ നടത്തയെപ്പറ്റി വളരെ വ്യസനിച്ചുപറഞ്ഞത് യുക്തമായി. ഇപ്രകാരമുള്ള വിഷമസംഭവങ്ങള്‍, സഭാസിക്രട്ടരിയുടെ ആലോചനക്കുറവുകൊണ്ടുണ്ടായി എന്നാണ് വിചാരിക്കാനുള്ളത്. പബ്ളിക്ക് പ്രസംഗങ്ങള്‍ കേള്‍പ്പാന്‍ ആരെയും അനുവദിക്കേണ്ടതുതന്നെ. എന്നാലും "മജിക് ലാന്‍റേണ്‍" ഉള്ളപ്പോഴെങ്കിലും, പ്രവേശനട്ടിക്കെറ്റ് ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നാല്‍ എത്രയോ ഭേദമായിരിക്കും. പടങ്ങള്‍ കാട്ടുന്ന "തമാശ" കാണ്മാന്‍ അല്ലാതെ പ്രസംഗം ഗ്രഹിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാത്ത ബാലന്മാരെക്കൊണ്ട് ഹാള്‍ നിറയുവാനും, അവരുടെ "കാളികൂളിത്തനങ്ങള്‍" കൊണ്ട് സഭ അലങ്കോലപ്പെടുവാനുമിടയാകുന്നത് വ്യസനിക്കത്തക്ക അവസ്ഥതന്നെ.
Melee at the Jubilee Hall

A few snippets have been inserted elsewhere relating to some of the incidents that occurred on the occasion of Miss Williams's public lecture at Jubilee Town Hall yesterday evening. One of these incidents is about Mr. Lepper, the Assembly secretary, having sent some of the ladies forcefully out of the hall, into the balcony. Among these women were native Christians, Eurasians, Hindus, etc. Mr. Lepper's action had resulted in several of the teachers and students, who had specially been invited to Miss Williams's school, to leave the hall immediately. It was Miss Williams herself who led them back to the hall later. Such a move on the part of Mr. Lepper, who is a college professor and a member of the civilised European community, is deplorable.
Another incident was that the speech had to be stopped halfway through due to the rudeness of some people sitting at the back of the hall. It is most reprehensible that they did not give up their misdeeds in spite of Mr. Hadgeson, who was presiding over the meeting, pleading with them.
We also learnt that during this commotion, some of the women in the front rows were poked with sticks by some hooligans in the audience. It looks like there were young students and unemployed street vagrants among the boisterous lot. This kind of commotion has happened in this hall even in the past. It was the most apt gesture on the part of Mr. Lionel Davidson, a British national, to speak about their indecency and express his displeasure at their conduct. Another lady who came to address the assembly, without even considering her physical condition, was interrupted and humiliated. It is to be assumed that such troublesome incidents had occurred due to the lack of proper planning on the part of the secretary of the assembly.
Everyone should be allowed to listen to public speeches. But even then, it would have been better to have an entry ticket when the "Magic Lantern"* was scheduled to be shown. It is indeed a disappointing situation that the assembly hall was filled by boys who were unable to understand even the sermon. They were interested only in the comic movies shown there and in their noisy antics.
