The government calendar and records show that a savings bank system has been set up by the Government of Travancore. It is certainly necessary to find out how many people have opened up accounts in these savings banks after the introduction of this new system.

While many in Travancore were depositing money in the savings banks of British post offices, what could be the reason that they did not entrust such cash with  Government of Travancore-owned saving banks? Newspapers had pointed out, at the time of the establishment of the savings banks itself, that it would be convenient to the public only if the banks were set up in post offices. Hardships faced by the people who go to the government taluk’s (sub-district) treasuries to deposit and withdraw money have not diminished from the past and the work of tellers, too, has not reduced. As such, the general public do not approve of the institution as much as one might expect because it lacks facilities. Main post offices have loyal and responsible staff. There is also sufficient police protection. People usually find it easier to go to post offices to make transactions. In such a scenario, it would be advisable to relocate the savings banks from the sub-treasuries to the main post offices and test the progress of their functioning. Although postmasters may have to be paid higher salaries, we think this system can be tried by reducing their work load and giving them the additional responsibility of cash management.
