One of the foremost nationalists of contemporary India passed away recently. The news of the passing away of W. C. Banerjee on 21 July in England caused great grief to the people of India. A Bengali, Mr Banerjee was married and had settled with his family in England. Mr Banerjee was one of the founding members of the Indian National Congress. He has been both president and secretary of the organisation, and generously devoted his life, wealth and mind to it. He acquired fame and wealth as a barrister and also carried out his duties towards India in the noblest of manners. While in India and even when he lived in England, his thoughts were always about India. For the benefit of the nation, he talked many members of British Parliament into becoming pro-Indian; established a magazine called India and made them more aware about the situation in India. He was of the opinion that only progressive sections can do good for India. His demise at this juncture comes as a great misfortune to the country.

The extent to which he worked for the freedom of expression of the Indian press in the initial years is evident from the history of the newspaper, Bengali. It is believed that if not for his failing health, Mr Banerjee would have embarked on the journey to becoming a British parliamentarian. Despite being sick for long, frequent reports on his recovery led the people of India to believe that he was getting better. No one suspected that he would leave for the other world so soon.
