Our revered writer "Agasthyan" from Anchal, renowned for his proficiency in Sanskrit expression and ethos, has once again found himself in the Editor's discard pile. Here are some excerpts from a poignant letter addressed to the Maharajah regarding the affairs of a temple at Agasthyakot.

“A splendid temple dedicated to the "Panchadevas"* has been constructed by the Government at a location known as Agasthyakot for the collective benefit of your subjects. An annual grant of Rupees 150 is allocated for thatching. For daily maintenance expenses, an allowance of 3 measures of rice and Rupees 7 per month is also sanctioned. This provision has brought contentment to many of us. However, owing to the expenses associated with the daily donation mentioned above, only one puja is conducted, and that too during the daytime. This limitation poses a challenge for ascetics, who observe fasting and adhere to rituals, as they are unable to witness and participate in the lamp rites and the conch shell call during dusk. The term "disruption" used by this writer should be interpreted as the "immobility of our adversary, immobilised by anger."

In our previous issue, we highlighted a poet's letter wherein he likened himself to the moon, rescued from the discard pile. Subsequently, another writer forwarded a similar letter he encountered elsewhere. This time, a poet has shared his thoughts with a newspaper editor, expressing resilience in the face of criticism. He dismisses the ugliness of criticism as insignificant and absurd, asserting that a multitude of such critiques will not tarnish his honour and reputation. The poet attributes jealousy, hypocrisy, wickedness, and stupidity to the critics, and declares his decision not to dignify such remarks with a response, deeming it as futile. Much like the previous poet who compared himself to the moon, this poet asserts his success and reputation.

Some officials resort to unconventional means to retaliate against the families of government officials. One such method involves targeting subordinates, who are relatives or friends of the editors. For instance, if the education department faces criticism, these officials may investigate whether any of the editor's relatives work in that department. If a connection is found, the official might question them, stating, "Didn't he (so and so person) criticise the department in the newspaper?" This could result in actions such as transfers, salary reductions, or even termination from the job. The affected individuals may express their grievances, lamenting, "You great sinner! Why did he do this to me in my old age? Couldn’t he abstain from such criticism?” However, such fruitless complaints only serve to amuse onlookers silently.

An example of these capricious acts is elucidated in the following correspondence: "Your coverage of the scandals in the Survey Department seems misguided. Have you taken a moment to reflect on the individuals involved? Isn't your elder brother currently employed in the survey office? Perhaps you are indifferent to his situation. However, by targeting the survey department, you are not just addressing the alleged wrongdoings but also impacting your elder brother's professional life. Are you aware of the hardship you are causing him? Why remain oblivious to these consequences?"

 Your status as a Nair has become a source of concern for fellow Nair employees. They are experiencing obstacles in receiving promotions and salary increments, as these opportunities seem to be allocated to foreigners (Brahmins) instead. This disparity appears to be a result of your public criticisms in newspapers affiliated with the Nair community. While your concern for your elder brother is appreciated, it would be advisable to refrain from discussing the scandals. It is important to stay informed about the current situation. Displaying subservience in such matters can only yield positive outcomes. Emulate the example of Shikhandi*, who, despite initially confronting Duryodhana,* received five hundred initially and subsequently two hundred every year. Adopt a similar approach for a smoother resolution. This concludes our response to the letter. The editors do not hold those positions in newspapers to favour their elder brothers, younger brothers, or relatives, facilitating job opportunities, promotions, and salary increments. It is essential for one to avoid actions that could potentially harm his own interests. Family ties play a significant role only within the household, metaphorically speaking.
