Rupees one lakh (spent on Kettukalyanam at Vadassery Ammaveedu)

The Government of Travancore has spent Rs 1 lakh or more towards the purpose of Kettukalyanam* at Vadassery Ammaveedu. Apart from the expenditure of such a vast amount of money, many important officers were directed to concentrate their attention, for a period of nearly five or six months, solely on the wedding. Also, the government has allowed all these expenditures without any benefit towards the public good. The government figures prove that this much money was not spent even on the previous Pallikkettu*. Everyone would agree that the ceremony at Vadassery Ammaveedu had more decorations, celebrations, and luxuries than on the occasion of the Pallikkettu.

This large sum would include the cost of the platters, honorary chains, bracelets, and other gifts given to the officials and artists on the occasion of the wedding itself and afterwards. We should consider what this limitless money has been spent on. The Maharajah of Travancore belongs to the Marumakkathayam line of succession. We believe that the readers know that the Maharajah's sisters and their sons are the heirs of the kingdom. No one can speak against it if the Maharajah spends any amount of money for the glory and happiness of his attendants, Nethyaramma*, sons, or daughters from his own money or from the amount allocated for his own expenditure. Those who wish for the welfare of the land will regret allowing a large portion of the Travancore Government's property to be spent on a meaningless ceremony for the Maharajah's daughter, which is inimical to the reformation of society.

We should try to find out what is spent on such celebrations in the neighbouring state of Kochi: There has never been any publicity for such meaningless weddings in Kochi. The Maharajah's wife there is called ‘Nethyaramma’ and she is called ‘Ammachi’ in Travancore. These women do not hold any significant position in the seats of state administration. They do not have the luxuries and conditions granted to princes and princesses in the royal family.

We do not have to seek the reason anywhere else. Firstly, the Maharajah's wife and children are not heirs to the kingdom. Secondly, they do not belong to the Maharajah's own caste. Even if there are no heirs in the royal family, the Nethyaramma and her children are not the heirs of the kingdom. In view of this state of things, our sense of morality prompts us to say that, knowingly or unwittingly, the royalists themselves are causing the disorder to the royal devotion of the subjects by allowing more honours and luxuries than are allowed to the members of the royal family and by displaying them in the public eye.

Notes from the translator:

*Kettukalyanam is the ritualistic mock-marriage practised by the families following the Marumakkathayam system.

*Pallikkettu is the wedding of the royals.

*Nethyaramma refers to the wife of the Maharajah.
