ഈ രാജ്യത്തിൽ നെറ്റാൽ ന്യൂക്കാസിൽ ടൌണിനുള്ളിൽ, സൌത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ ബാങ്കിന് സമീപം ഒരു അതിവിശേഷമായ കെട്ടിടം പണി തീർത്തിരിക്കുന്നു. ആ ബംഗ്ലാവിൻ്റെ പേരു 'ടൌൺഹാൾ ' എന്നാണ്. യൂറോപ്പ്യന്മാർ പ്രസംഗം നടത്തുന്നത് അവിടെ വച്ചാണ്. മാസത്തിൽ രണ്ടു ദിവസം യൂറോപ്പ്യന്മാരെല്ലാം കൂടി അവിടെ വച്ച് പ്രസംഗം ചെയ്തുവരുന്നു. ഈ കെട്ടിടം പണി തുടങ്ങിയത് 1903 ജൂൺ മാസം 10 നു ആണ്. 1906 ജൂൺ മാസം 4 നു ആണ് പണി സകലതും തീർന്നത്. മൂന്നു വർഷം എത്രയും ഉത്സാഹത്തോടും വേഗത്തിലും പണി ചെയ്തിട്ടാണ് ഇത്ര വേഗം തീർന്നത്. നമ്മുടെ രാജ്യത്താണെങ്കിൽ പത്തു വർഷം കൊണ്ട് ഇതു മാതിരി ഭംഗിയായും വൃത്തിയായും, വിചിത്രമായി ചായത്തിൽ ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ള ചിത്രപ്പണികളുമായി, ഒരു കെട്ടിടം പണി തീർക്കുവാൻ നമ്മുടെ സർക്കാർ വിചാരിച്ചാൽ കൂടി സാധിക്കുവാൻ പ്രയാസമാണ്. ഇതുമാതിരി ഒരു കെട്ടിടം ലണ്ടൻ, പാരീസ് മുതലായ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ കൂടി ഇല്ലാ എന്നാണ് ഇവിടെ ചിലർ പറയുന്നത്. ഇതിന് എത്ര തട്ടാണെന്ന് എണ്ണിത്തീർക്കുന്നതിന് കൂടി വളരെ പ്രയാസമാണ്. ഈ കെട്ടിടത്തിനുള്ളിൽ കയറിപ്പോയാൽ, തിരിയെ ആ വഴി തന്നെ എന്നു വിചാരിച്ചു വേറെ വഴിയിൽ കൂടി ഇറങ്ങിപ്പോരുന്നു. കെട്ടിടത്തിൻ്റെ നാലു ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും ഒരേ മാതിരി വാതിലുകളാണ്. ഇതു ഗവൺമെൻ്റു വക ചിലവിനാൽ കെട്ടിയിട്ടുള്ളതാണ്. അതിനുള്ളിൽ ഓരോ തട്ടുകളിൽ കത്തിയെരിയുന്ന ഗ്യാസ് വിളക്കുകളുടെ പ്രകാശവും, ശോഭയും കണ്ടാൽ, സൂര്യൻ ഉദിച്ചു നിൽക്കുന്നുവോ എന്നു ആർക്കും മനസ്സിൽ സംശയം ജനിക്കുന്നതാണ്. ഏഴാമത്തെ തട്ടിൽ കയറി നോക്കിയാൽ, വിളക്കുകളുടെ പ്രകാശം ചന്ദ്രനുദിച്ചത് മാതിരിയാണ്. ഇങ്ങനെ ഓരോ തട്ടുകളിലും പച്ച, ചുമപ്പ്, മഞ്ഞ, വെള്ള മുതലായ നിറത്തിലുള്ള ഗ്യാസ് ലൈറ്റ് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കാന്ത വിളക്കാണ് വളരെ പ്രകാശത്തെ കാണിക്കുന്നത്. ഇതിന് എത്ര പവൻ ചിലവായിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന് നെറ്റാൽ ഗവൺമെൻ്റിനല്ലാതെ എനിക്കറിവാൻ പാടില്ല. ഈ വിശേഷമായ കെട്ടിടം കാണുന്നവർക്ക് സ്വർഗ്ഗലോകം ഇതു തന്നെ എന്നു തോന്നിപ്പോകുന്നതാണ്. ഈ ടൌൺഹാൾ കെട്ടിടത്തിൻ്റെ മുകളിൽ നാലു ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും നടന്നു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഘടികാരങ്ങൾ എന്തു മാത്രം ഭംഗിയുള്ളതാണെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞറിയിക്കുവാൻ പ്രയാസമാണ്. കണ്ടാൽ മാത്രമേ അറിയുകയുള്ളൂ. അതിൽ ആർക്കും രാവിലെ എട്ടുമണി മുതൽ രാത്രി എട്ടുമണിവരയ്ക്കും കയറിക്കാണുന്നതിന് യൂറോപ്പ്യന്മാർ യാതൊരു തടസ്തവും ചെയ്യുന്നില്ല. രാത്രി എട്ടു മണിക്കുമേൽ കയറിക്കാണുവാൻ സാധിക്കുകയില്ല. യൂറോപ്പ്യന്മാരുടെ കൂടെപ്പോയാൽ ഏത് സമയത്തും ആർക്കും യാതൊരു തടസ്ഥവും ഇല്ലാ. ആ കെട്ടിടത്തിന് ചുറ്റുമായി പട്ടാളക്കാർ കാവലുണ്ട്. രാത്രികാലങ്ങളിൽ വിളക്കു കൂടാതെ ആർക്കും അവിടെ നടക്കുവാൻ പാടില്ല. റാന്തലില്ലാതെ അവിടെ ആരെങ്കിലും സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നതായി കണ്ടാൽ വെടി വെച്ചു കൊന്നുകളയുന്നതിന് പട്ടാളം ഗവൺമെൻ്റിൻ്റെ ഉത്തരവുണ്ട്.

A South African wonder

In Natal, South Africa, a remarkable building has been completed within the town limits of Newcastle near the South African Bank. The name of this bungalow is 'Town hall'. It is the place where Europeans deliver speeches. Two days a month, all the Europeans come together to attend the meetings here. The construction of this building started on 10th of June, 1903. The work was completed on the 4th of June, 1906. It was completed this quickly due to diligent and fast work for three years. It would be difficult for our government to complete a building with such beautiful, clean, and peculiarly painted paintings in ten years. Some people here say that there is no other building like this even in places like London, Paris etc.
It is also very difficult to calculate how many floors it has. If you go inside this building, you might exit through another way thinking it is the same way. All the four parts of the building have the same type of doors. The cost for this building is borne by the government. If you see the light and the brightness of the gas lamps burning on each floor, you will doubt whether the sun is shining. If you go up to the seventh floor, the light of the lamps is like the moon. In this manner, each floor is lit by a gas light or a magnetic lamp with colours such as green, yellow, white, etc. No one, except the Natal Government knows how much money this has cost. Those who see this special building will feel that this is heaven. It is hard to describe the beauty of the clocks fixed on all four sides of the Town Hall building. It has to be seen to be believed.. Europeans do not prevent anyone from entering it from eight in the morning to eight at night. No one is allowed to enter the building after eight o'clock at night. If you are accompanied by Europeans, no one will have any problem at any time. The building is guarded by soldiers. No one should roam there at night without a lamp. If anyone is seen walking there without a lantern, the army has orders from the government to shoot them dead.
