A Demeaning Behaviour

The curiosity to learn about the personal details of the authors of newspaper articles critical of the misconduct of government officials and other persons of interest is common to both of them. We have come to know of many minds getting agitated over such articles on numerous occasions. The growth of this unhealthy behaviour has become an impediment to the formation of an impartial and unbiased public opinion about issues concerning people. If it is to praise the articles written in the larger interest of the society that the search for the personal details of the writers is made, then it will be quite encouraging for the growth of healthy journalism. But the inquisitive nature of this desire for learning about the writers of articles does not appear to be brightening the rosy side of journalism. The seamy side of one’s actions [text missing] if someone writes in a paper about public grievances and the person responsible for bringing about such a reprehensible situation, the person thus criticised becomes despicable in the eyes of the people. Then it will be natural for him to consider the critic as his enemy and he may even try to take revenge upon him. Although man is inclined by instinct to be inquisitive about others, he would be well advised to keep himself from falling into pitfalls, as the inclination to ferret out personal details of others can be questionable in nature. “Is what has been said about me true?” Without considering this question in all its seriousness, if someone happens to adopt a vengeful attitude towards the correspondent saying, “has he said so about me?” his mind will certainly lose much of its cheerfulness and it will further be clouded with anger. And in due course, he will come to know from experience that it has had a corroding effect on his ease of living as well. What is more deplorable is that this defect in his character will gradually pave the way for many more grave acts of sin.

The capability of the government officials to bring those correspondents who write articles with barbs under the radar of suspicion, mostly out of curiosity, and harm them without any rhyme or reason is not uncommon. It is also well known that newspaper correspondents from many Taluks of Travancore have complained about being frequently persecuted by such officials. The benefits to be gained by harming the correspondents suspected to be the authors of hostile articles will be much less compared to the public good arising out of any sincere attempt made by the officials at keeping their actions free from blemishes. We have already stated that the corrupt officials as well as some others with vested interests are equally desirous of knowing about the correspondents. Another demeaning conduct these people have in this regard is their greed for making a few bucks out of the targeted newspaper’s office somehow. These people do not remember that it is a punishable offence to lure workers engaged by a paper and plant doubts in their minds to glean the kind of information they want from them by asking them tricky and indirect questions. There is nothing surprising in the unlettered people making such despicable moves. But, when the educated ones are seen indulging in such actions, one cannot but grieve over their education gone wasted.

We got information regarding some people attempting to take revenge upon certain gentlemen based on their suspicion of authorship of articles critical of the corrupt and irresponsible government officials published in Svadesabhimani. This wicked move has of late reared its head more threateningly than ever before. Some time ago, a gentleman correspondent had sent us an article about the editorial policy of the Malayala Manorama of Kottayam, which we subsequently published in our paper. In their eagerness to know about its author, a person connected to the Malayala Manorama came to Thiruvananthapuram and tempted a worker employed at this paper’s office and [text missing] may have seen it published. We do not have any complaint with the Malayala Manorama in this matter. All the same, we only desire that the educated people who have taken to journalism as an esteemed profession be informed that their frantic efforts, even by resorting to dubious ways, at digging out personal information of the correspondents will only go on to dampen our human spirit.
