Reforms in Education

The (Education reforms) committee has prepared a curriculum to exclude English from primary schools and make it an optional subject in Malayalam medium middle schools. This change means that teaching English in Malayalam medium schools is no longer compulsory. Given the current state of Malayalam medium schools, it appears that they will stop teaching English altogether. Even if headmasters begin including English in some Malayalam medium schools to compete with English medium schools, it will turn out to be a mere ploy to keep children from dropping out.

Another shortcoming is the exclusion of natural sciences from the educational system. Committee members claim that there aren’t any appropriate textbooks available for it. In that case, they should make sure that textbooks are written by people who have studied natural sciences. What kind of education is going to be imparted in Malayalam medium schools without including science lessons? It is difficult to understand what kind of benefits students are likely to gain from such education.

If they study only in Malayalam and pass the main exam, it will not be of much use when they apply for government services. Employers only want candidates who have studied in English. When knowledge of English is required in every department, what good are those who do not know English? After studying Malayalam for 10-12 years, the committee offers them jobs such as that of primary school headmaster. If a matriculate and someone who has cleared the Malayalam high school exam are applying for a job, then possibly, the matriculate will get the job. Since they have mastered the elementary principles of natural sciences, they will alone be qualified to work as a teacher in a primary school.

As suggested by the committee, which department in their civil services is the government going to set aside for those who have cleared their exams in Malayalam? When the preliminary examination was introduced, those who had passed the lower examination stood no chance of getting employed. They were forced to appear for the preliminary examination again. When the middle school test was introduced, the primary examination too became ineffective. Similarly, when the new middle school exam is introduced, the old middle school one will become obsolete. Students are facing many hurdles because the value of exams is being progressively eroded by the government that is conducting them. We do not understand how these future examiners, who have never studied natural sciences themselves, will be able to impart primary education effectively.

A student can clear the English middle school examination or the matriculation examination in the same time that they pursue the Malayalam middle school or high school examination. In such a situation, what purpose do special Malayalam exams serve? Are students studying in Malayalam medium schools capable of acquiring the qualifications required to become teachers? Till the time natural sciences are not taught in Malayalam medium schools, it will not be sufficient to appoint those who have passed examinations in Malayalam for teachers’ jobs. Can we claim primary education to be complete by simply teaching reading and writing? What else will the students be taught besides natural science lessons? What good is the country going to gain from an education that does not prepare its children to understand natural phenomena? What good are examinations in Malayalam going to do for education if they produce teachers who have no knowledge? Many unqualified people have already got positions in Malayalam medium schools as teachers. That department will now be full of teachers who ruin children's education. Year after year, if students who are not knowledgeable, and those who do not have enough understanding in any of the subjects, are pushed through such examinations, it will only cause more harm than good. In any case, the exclusion of natural sciences from Malayalam medium schools and examinations does not make any sense at all. If science textbooks are not available, it is the duty of the government to make necessary arrangements to produce them. There are native Malayalam speakers with knowledge of natural sciences and the resources to write many such books, if only the government so demands.
