മദ്രാസില്‍ നിന്നു ഒരു ലേഖകന്‍ എഴുതുന്നത് :- " ഇക്കൊല്ലത്തെ സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലാ കാണ്‍വോക്കേഷന്‍ ഇക്കഴിഞ്ഞ മാര്‍ച്ച് 31-ാനു വ്യാഴാഴ്ച നടന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. ചാന്‍സലറായ ഗവര്‍ണര്‍ സര്‍ ആര്‍തര്‍ ലാലിക്കു സുഖക്കേടുനിമിത്തം അധ്യക്ഷം വഹിപ്പാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ലാ. ഗ്രാഡ്വേറ്റുകളോട് ഉപദേശപ്രസംഗം ചെയ്തതു ജസ്റ്റീസ് മിസ്തര്‍ അബ്ദര്‍റഹിം ആയിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം മദ്രാസില്‍ വന്നിട്ട് അധികം കാലമായിട്ടില്ലെങ്കിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രസംഗത്തെപ്പറ്റി പരക്കെ നല്ല അഭിപ്രായമാണ് ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുള്ളത്. വിദ്യാഭ്യാസകാര്യത്തില്‍, ഈശ്വരഭക്തികൂടെ മനുഷ്യരുടെ ഉള്ളില്‍ ഉറപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള സമ്പ്രദായങ്ങള്‍ ഇല്ലായ്ക നിമിത്തമാണ് ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ ചെറുപ്പക്കാര്‍ പലര്‍ അക്രമങ്ങള്‍ക്കു തുനിയുന്നതെന്നും മറ്റും ആക്ഷേപം നടക്കുന്നതിനെപ്പറ്റി അദ്ദേഹം സവിശേഷം വിസ്തരിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഹിന്തുക്കളും മുഹമ്മദീയരും അവരവരുടെ മതനിബന്ധനകളാല്‍ ഈശ്വരഭക്തിയോടുകൂടി തന്നെയാണ് വളര്‍ന്നുവരുന്നതെന്നും, ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പഠിത്തംകൊണ്ട് അവര്‍ നാസ്തികന്മാരാവാന്‍ ഇടയില്ലെന്നും, പക്ഷേ, അവര്‍ കുട്ടിക്കാലത്തു ഗ്രഹിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള മതതത്വങ്ങളും പാഠശാലയില്‍ അവരുടെ മുമ്പിലെത്തുന്ന നവീനശാസ്ത്ര തത്വങ്ങളും തമ്മില്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന മത്സരംകൊണ്ട് അവര്‍ അല്പസ്വല്പം വ്യതിചലിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരിക്കാമെന്നും; വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ അവരവര്‍ പഠിക്കുന്ന സര്‍വകലാശാലകളില്‍ തന്നെ പാർത്ത് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം പൂര്‍ത്തിവരുത്തത്തക്കവണ്ണം പാശ്ചാത്യരീതിയനുസരിച്ചുള്ള വ്യവസ്ഥകള്‍ ചെയ്യേണ്ടതാണെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പ്രസ്താവിച്ചിരുന്നു. പ്രസംഗം ആപാദചൂഡം മുഹമ്മദിയമതഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും മുസ്ലീം കവിതകളില്‍ നിന്നും ഉദ്ധരിക്കപ്പെട്ട തത്വങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ട് നിറച്ചിരുന്നു. അന്നു കാണ്‍വോക്കേഷന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞ ശേഷം, ബ്രോഡ് വേയില്‍ സെന്‍റിനറി ഹാളില്‍ വച്ച് തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ നായര്‍ ഗ്രാഡ്വേറ്റുകള്‍ക്കു ഇവിടത്തെ തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ നായര്‍ യൂനിയന്‍കാര്‍ ഒരു വിരുന്നു നല്‍കിയിരുന്നു. അതില്‍ അഗ്രാസനം വഹിച്ചതു 'മദ്രാസ് സ്റ്റാന്‍ഡാര്‍ഡ്,' പത്രാധിപരും മേല്പടി യൂനിയന്‍ അധ്യക്ഷനുമായ മിസ്റ്റര്‍ പി. എന്‍. രാമന്‍പിള്ള ആയിരുന്നു. വിശേഷിച്ച്, ശ്രീമതി പാറുക്കുട്ടിഅമ്മയുടെ ബി. ഏ. വിജയത്തെ അനുമോദിച്ച് യൂനിയന്‍ വകയായി ഒരു സ്വര്‍ണ്ണമുദ്ര ശ്രീമതി പാറുക്കുട്ടി അമ്മയ്ക്കു നല്‍കുകയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പതിവായി വളരെ കൊല്ലമായി നടന്നു വരുന്ന മലയാളിക്ലബ് വക വിരുന്നാഘോഷവും അതേസമയം തന്നെ മറ്റൊരു സ്ഥലത്തു നടന്നിരുന്നു. ആ ക്ലബ് മദ്രാസില്‍ പാര്‍ക്കുന്ന മലയാളികളെല്ലാം ചേര്‍ന്ന് നടക്കുന്നതും മുന്‍പറഞ്ഞ യൂനിയന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞകൊല്ലത്തില്‍ തിരുവിതാംകൂറുകാരില്‍ ചിലര്‍കൂടി തുടങ്ങീട്ടുള്ളതും ആണ്. മലയാളിക്ലബിന്‍റെ യോഗത്തിനു തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ നായന്മാര്‍ കൂടാതിരിക്കുമാറ് കഴിഞ്ഞകൊല്ലവും ഇതേ വിധത്തില്‍ ഒരേ സമയത്തു രണ്ടെടത്തും വിരുന്നു നടന്നിരുന്നു. ഇക്കൊല്ലം ഭിന്നിപ്പ് വളരെ വലുതായും, വിശേഷാല്‍ പ്രസ്താവനത്തിനു ഹേതുവായും ഭവിച്ചിരിക്കയാണ്. ശ്രീമതി പാറുക്കുട്ടിഅമ്മയുടെ വിജയത്തെ അനുമോദിക്കുന്നതില്‍, തിരുവിതാംകൂറുകാരായ നായന്മാര്‍ മാത്രമല്ലാ, മലബാര്‍, കൊച്ചി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെയും നായന്മാര്‍ക്കും മറ്റു മലയാളികള്‍ക്കും ചാരിതാര്‍ത്ഥ്യമുണ്ടായിട്ട് മലയാളിക്ലബ്ബുകാർ ക്ഷണിച്ചിരുന്നു എങ്കിലും, തിരുവിതാംകൂറുകാര്‍, ചിലരൊഴികെ, മേല്പടി ക്ലബ് വക വിരുന്നു സ്വീകരിക്കാന്‍ പോയിരുന്നില്ലാ. നായര്‍ സമുദായത്തില്‍ ആദ്യമായി ബി. ഏ വിരുതു സമ്പാദിച്ച ഒരു സ്ത്രീക്കു തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ നായര്‍ യൂനിയനെക്കാള്‍ പഴക്കവും വിശാലതയുമുള്ള മലയാളിക്ലബിന്‍റെ ക്ഷണനത്തെ അംഗീകരിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാതെ പോയതില്‍ ഇവിടത്തെ മലയാളികള്‍ക്കു പരക്കെ ഇച്ഛാഭംഗം ഉണ്ട്. ഈ ഭിന്നിപ്പിനു ഇടകൊടുക്കേണ്ടിയില്ലായിരുന്നു എന്നും ആക്ഷേപം നടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ തന്നെയും ഇവയില്‍ ഒരു വിരുന്നു നീക്കിവയ്ക്കാമായിരുന്നു. പഠിത്തം എത്രതന്നെയുണ്ടായിട്ടും, ഇത്തരം കക്ഷിഭേദവിചാരങ്ങള്‍ ഇല്ലാതാകാത്തതു ശോചനീയം തന്നെയാണ്. മദ്രാസില്‍ മലയാളികള്‍ക്കു, ദേശം പ്രമാണിച്ച് ഓരോ സംഘവും, ഉദ്ദേശവും ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കാള്‍, എല്ലാവരും യോജിച്ചിരിപ്പാന്‍ കഴിയാത്തത് വല്ല ശാപത്തിന്‍റെയും ഫലമായിരിക്കുമോ? പക്ഷേ, തിരുവിതാംകൂറില്‍ വേരുറച്ചുപോയിരിക്കുന്ന ജാതിസ്പര്‍ദ്ധയും കക്ഷിപ്പിണക്കവും അവയില്‍ പാർത്തു പഴകിയവരുടെ ഉള്ളില്‍ നിന്നു ഇത്രദൂരസ്ഥമായ ദേശത്തും ഇത്ര പരിഷ്കൃതമായ പാശ്ചാത്യവിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ലഭിച്ചശേഷവും മാഞ്ഞുപോകുന്നതല്ലെന്നു ദൃഷ്ടാന്തപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതായിരിക്കുമോ ഇതെന്നു നിശ്ചയമില്ലാ. ഒരു നായര്‍ സ്ത്രീ ഇപ്പോള്‍ ആദ്യമായി ബി. ഏ വിരുത് മേടിക്കുന്നതില്‍ സന്തോഷിപ്പാന്‍ ആ സ്ത്രീയുടെ ദേശക്കാര്‍ക്കു മാത്രമല്ലാ, അയല്‍ രാജ്യക്കാരായ നായന്മാര്‍ക്കും അവകാശമുണ്ടെന്നു തിരുവിതാംകൂറുകാരായ നായന്മാര്‍ക്ക് നല്ല ബോധം വരുത്തുന്നതിനു ശ്രീമതി പാറുക്കുട്ടിഅമ്മയ്ക്ക് തോന്നാതെ പോയതും വ്യസനിക്കത്തക്ക സംഗതി തന്നെ. ഈ സംഗതിയെപ്പറ്റി ഇവിടെ മലയാളികള്‍ പരക്കെ വ്യസനിക്കുന്നുമുണ്ട്.

A correspondent writes from Madras:-
This year's university convocation was held on Thursday, March 31. Governor Sir Arthur Lawley, the chancellor, was unable to preside due to ill health. Justice Mr. Abdurrahim delivered the valedictory address to the graduates. Although he has not been in Madras for a long time, his speech has been well received.
In the matter of education, he specifically elaborated on the accusations that young people in India are resorting to violence due to the lack of practices to inculcate godliness in people. He said that Hindus and Mohammedans are brought up with piety by their own religious observances and that English education does not make them atheists, but that they may be a little distracted by the contest between the religious principles that they have grasped in childhood and the modern scientific principles that come before them in school. He also stated that provision should be made for students to complete their education according to the western style in the universities where they are studying. The speech was filled with tenets quoted from Mohammedan scriptures and Muslim poetry.
After the convocation that day, the Travancore Nair Unionists hosted a banquet for the Travancore Nair graduates at Centenary Hall on Broadway. It was presided over by Mr. P. N. Raman Pilla, editor of the 'Madras Standard' and president of the said union.
Mrs. Parukutty Amma was given a gold medal on behalf of the union, congratulating her on obtaining the B. A. The Malayalee Club's banquet, which has been held regularly for many years, was held at another place at the same time.
This particular club is run by all the Malayalees living in Madras and the aforesaid union was started by some Travancoreans only last year. So as not to attend the meeting of the Malayalee club, the feast by the Travancore Nairs also was held at the same time last year too. This year the disagreement has been very much visible and has led to divisive statements.
In congratulating Mrs. Parukutty Amma's success, not only the Nairs of Travancore, but also those of Malabar and Kochi and other Malayalees were invited by the Malayalee Club. But except for a few, the Travancoreans did not take part in the Club's feast. Malayalees here are widely disappointed that a woman from the Nair community who has earned a B.A. degree for the first time could not accept the invitation of the Malayalee Club. The club is older and more popular than the Travancore Nair Union. It is also observed that this competition should not have been allowed. Either of the feasts could have been postponed to another occasion.
It is sad that no matter how educated they are, such partisanship does not disappear. Could it be the result of some curse that the Malayalees in Madras face because they could not be united as a group and work for the purpose of having to preserve the culture of the land? However, it is not certain whether this is an indication that the caste rivalry and factional strife rooted in Travancore will not disappear from among those who have received such sophisticated western education and lived for such a long time in a distant land after. It is also a matter of concern that Mrs. Parukutty Amma did not think it fit to make the people of Travancore aware that not only her countrymen, but also the people of the neighbouring countries have the right to be happy and celebrate when they find that a Nair woman now has secured a B.A. degree for the first time. Malayalees here are greatly disheartened about this matter.
