Although it is the British who rule over India, large chunks of Indians still live within the suzerainty of the princely states. There are many kings in India now who are either reigning kings or are on an annual pension from the British rulers. Among them, those who have prominence are around a hundred. The impact of their rule by royal decree on the people is tremendous; it is nothing negligible. Many people have begun to feel that it is not becoming of the British government to take unilateral decisions aimed at serving such important and knowledgeable people without consulting them at all about matters affecting their lives. However, it is learnt from certain wired messages that the current India State Secretary, Mr. Morley, is in consultation with the Prince of Wales about the need for forming a council of princely states in India. Although the people’s representatives in the legislature bring their demands to the attention of the government and succeed in their attempts to some extent, no channel has been opened for the kings of the princely states as yet for them to bring people’s issues to the attention of the government. Mr. Morley certainly needs to be congratulated for having felt the need for organising the kings of princely states into a council so that their views could be formulated and heard directly and for having begun consultations about it with the Prince of Wales, who has recently become acquainted with the kings of the princely states.
